Is Online Social Networking Harder than We Thought



Recently, you may have noticed a story from Cleveland about a marketing professional managing an online group for jobs and her rude responses to some folks who tried to connect with her via LinkedIn and other places. I bring this up as background, not as link bait, so I won’t post anything about the story or person here but I’m sure you can probably find it. If you read the comments around that story you will find a spectrum of sentiment among users of social networks like LinkedIn. Many agreed with the Cleveland pro’s sentiments against connecting (if not the rudeness with which she expressed them) and were equally frustrated by the sense of entitlement implicit in the very act of a cold connection request. Others were mortified by her assessment of younger generations and mystified by her unwillingness to connect.
